Representation In Media

In today's ICT lesson, we looked at "Representation In Media".

Here are some basic points.

•By definition, all media texts are re-presentations of reality.
•They are composed, lit, written, framed, cropped, captioned, branded, targeted and censored by their producers.
• They're fake versions of the reality we believe around us.
• Without media, our view of the world would be very limited
• We need the media to make sense of reality.
• The influence the media exerts has a major impact on the way we view the world.
• Media representations can reinforce or shatter our view on things.
• There wasmass manipulation in the 1920s and 1930s.
• We decode the different layers of truth/fiction.
• You must consider:

    • Who produced it?
    • What/who is represented in the text?
    • How is that thing represented?
    • Why was this particular representation (this shot, framed from this angle, this story phrased in these terms, etc) selected, and what might the alternatives have been?
    • What frame of reference does the audience use when understanding the representation?

Male and Female stereotypes and representation normally based on these aspects:

Typically masculine
•Tough
•Hard
•Sweaty
Typically feminine
•Fragile
•Soft
•Fragrant

Beatles Music Project

Our last music topic was all about The Beatles, we learnt about the history of the band and some of the songs the had written. Our final assessment was to recreate the song "Eleanor Rigby" by The Beatles and add our own twist to it. We copied the Eleanor Rigby score from a PDF file into Finale NotePad 2008 then converted it to a MIDI file and put it in garageband, we combined all of them to create the song. Our teacher then sent us the vocal notes MIDI file to put in to sound more like the original song. This is what we had to do to get a average level 4 on our project. To get higher we had to change the instruments of each track, create our own original track and add anything else that would go well with the song. I changed the instruments to trumpets, bass, acoustic guitar and orchestral strings. In addition to that i added a simple electric guitar track that i had composed my self giving a pop/hip hop twist to it. To emphasize the pop/hip hop i added beats and shakers to the background.

Ancient Greece: Humanities

We have just started a new topic in Humanities class: Ancient Greece. The mind map is about what my class would really want to know about Ancient Greece including many things like mythology, army and navy, sports, wars, geography, art... etc. The two I chose were Building (architecture) and Inventions of ancient greece. My favourite was actually one someone had already taken which was Mythology. We used mindmeister to create this mind map online, it has a broad range of styles and creativity tools for you to jot down ideas or notes for classes. I prefer taking notes on the computer compared to paper as it is neater and quicker to do. This Humanities project I am looking foward to doing as Ancient Greece ties in with almost everything we do in life (architecture, language, clothing, art... etc)

Summary

In this project in ICT, I have learned a lot of new blogging skills and how to apply them to other tasks I might need to do in the future including the use of embedding, writing formally, problem solving, creativeness…etc. Unexpectedly, I was improving my writing and editing skills too from all the blogging posts and checking through them. Through the whole project the tasks were simple and the instructions were short, but the hard part was figuring out how to do it and where to get it. The stuff I learned is easily applied when I’m doing other projects and tasks online like embedding things especially. Next time I learn something new, I need to apply the things I learnt and how I approach it, like how I did in ICT especially when figuring out how to do things.

BLOGGING GONE WRONG!!

Blogging can be a fun, exciting thing way to tell people what you're up to or express yourself but it can cost you your job, your place at school or EVERYTHING! From researching about this, I have learned what to do and what not to do. Hopfully you will too, here are some examples of blogging gone wrong!

Ellen Simonetti

Here is one example and probably one of the most famous examples of blogging gone wrong. This is Ellen Simoetti or known as in her blogs "Queen Of Sky", she posts stories about her job as a flight attendant Delta Airlines and calls it "Diary of a Flight Attendant". She revealed the airlines information and took photos of herself posing inappropriately in her airline uniform, after a while she was caught and got suspended from her job. She tried to fight back but ended up being fired!

Mark Jen
Mark Jen was an ex-worker for Google and also used to work for Microsoft. After 11 days at his new job for the most powerful search engine sites on the Internet, he was fired. On his first day of his job, he already was blogging all about it, blogging about the positives, negatives and comparing it to Microsoft. After being fired, he realised what he did wrong and apologised to Google but still didn't earn his job back.

Those are just two examples out of A LOT in the world, if you would like to read more about blogging gone wrong here are a few more examples you can read up on:

After reading this, you now know what could happen if you blog innapropriatly. Here are some of the things that I will try to do to keep my blog appropriate and school related:
I will not post any photos of myself or my friends.
I will not reveal any private information like my full name, my school, my adress, my age... etc.
I will not post anything not to do with school or anything a little off topic.

Hopefully you could follow these rules do making our internet a safer place and more fun and enjoying for others.

What I'm Learning In Humanities

I chose this video to post because in Humanities we are currently studying Weathering and Erosion.  I liked because this video is because it's not like a bunch of old scientists explaining what it is without breathing and speaking in the same tone all the way boringly, its a bunch of cartoons with energetic voices, in this video they explain it using superheros from a video game and how one superhero (breaker) who breaks things and changed the surroundings like weathering and the other (swoosh) takes all the remains away like erosion! I prefer being taught like this instead of having a sheet of paper where we have to memories a whole bunch of words. This video mainly summarises what i already know and confirms that i'm certain of the basics on the subject, maybe this video will either help you with your studies or teach you knew things!

Welcome!

Welcome,
This is my learning blog where I will be posting my school work here! It will be my school year online journal, later on in the year I'll probably look back and see all the great things I've done bringing back happy memories, I might consider using it out of school and posting everything I have done here too. From this blog hopfully I will be learning about how to create a blog and how to do different functions on it, I hope I will have also learned how to write formally, keep everything school related and keep the standard of my writing up.
